The 4 Things You Should Do to Prevent Mold After A Basement Flood

Get A Free Estimate

So you’ve pumped the water out of your basement, dried the space out, and maybe even gotten rid of that musty smell that always seems to take over after a basement flood. It may seem like your troubles are over — especially if you’ve taken the time to waterproof your basement for next time — but you might not be out of the woods yet.

Inspect Your Storage

Since your basement flooded, have you gone through the boxes and bins you keep down there? If you haven’t, you’ll want to do that soon. Check for items that are still damp, especially things like wood, boxes, and fabric, which can easily grow mold. Don’t overlook any drywall or wood paneling you have in your basement; they’re vulnerable to mold too. Anything still wet could develop mold — if it hasn’t already.

Clean Up
Mold is a serious issue for homes. If it spreads through your storage, it can easily spread to walls and beams and significantly damage your home’s structural integrity. That’s why it’s important to carefully determine whether an item can still be salvaged if it’s still wet or has already grown mold. To preserve as much of your storage as possible, you’ll want to clear out any damp items from your basement as soon as possible. Dry out the things that can be salvaged completely before putting them back.

Another important factor in taking care of your basement after a flood is making sure the walls, floor, and ceiling remain mold-free. While you’re cleaning up your storage, make sure you inspect your entire basement. If you have any damp drywall, now’s the time for it to come down.

Dehumidify

The reason basements grow mold so easily isn’t just because they flood. Standing water causes huge problems, but most basements are damp even if they’ve never experienced flooding. The moisture is in the air, and combined with the cool, dark conditions of most basements, it makes the environment a breeding ground for mold. You can’t easily make a basement less cool or damp, but you can dry out basement air. Why not try a basement dehumidifier?

Our  basement dehumidifier can dehumidify 2,500 square feet of space and is equipped with filters that remove tiny particles from the air and the musty odors that often go hand-in-hand with unfinished basements. If you’re serious about keeping mold out of your basement, Dehumidifier is the way to go.
