What Is the Best Span for Joists?

The materials used, the weight of the floor, and the width of the property are all a part of calculating the best span for floor joists. For this reason, there is no single appropriate floor joist span for your home- hence why over spanned joists are more common than would be considered ideal.

Getting the Right Span Is Hard

There is no such thing as a hard and fast rule when it comes to planning for joist spans; the same joist can have an ideal span of 9 to 12 feet, for example, depending on the kind of wood used to make it, whether it is engineered, its thickness, and the weight of the flooring are all important factors to consider. If any one of these calculations is made improperly or the joists are installed improperly, they will be over spanned.

This is a serious problem, of course, because the joists are incredibly important to your property’s health. A floor with strong, healthy joists will be firm, stable, and even – it will not sag or bounce underfoot, and it will uphold its part in maintaining the structure of your property. If you have over spanned joists, as a result of damage or poor planning, however, the issues will be many.

Over Spanning Is Dangerous

While over spanned joists are a serious issue for your property’s flooring, they also have a huge impact on the structure of your property. As an affected floor starts to sag and dip, it will pull away from the walls and destabilize them. This can lead to walls leaning and bowing as they deal with the weight of the structure without a vital support element.

If this issue is allowed to grow unchecked, structural collapses are very likely, both in the walls and in the flooring itself. This is not just damaging for your property; it is actively dangerous to the health and wellbeing of anyone who is around the floor or wall when it goes. Of course, it will also be far more expensive to fix the issues after the floor or wall has gone.
