Can I Repair Over Spanned Joists Alone?

We do not recommend that you try to repair damaged joists alone for several reasons. First and foremost, there are too many co-occurring issues that could be connected to over spanned joists and the damage that they cause.

DIY Can Go Very Wrong

The problem with DIY is that it can go wrong so quickly – if you fail to notice an underlying cause, or you ignore a secondary issue, the solution that you put in place could fail, regardless of the quality of your work). Furthermore, getting a hold of the products and tools that are required to get the best possible results isn’t always easy.

Crawl space jacks and foundation repair tools, for example, are not often available over the counter in hardware stores. Likewise, the equipment required to undertake these structural repairs can be hard to get a hold of and expensive to hire. Professionals, of course, will have these tools and products to hand, meaning that hiring an expert could be cheaper in the long run.

Professionals Get Better Results

So, a professional will have the tools, products, skills, and experience to repair your over spanned joists and any underlying causes or secondary issues that have formed. They will also be able to give you a more consistent, durable result to a higher standard, and may even do so at a lower cost than DIY repairs would. The most pressing reason to hire a professional, however, is safety.

Trying to deal with issues like foundation settlement, subsidence, bowing walls, sagging floors, and mold formations, which are all common in homes with over spanned joists, can be dangerous to your home and health. One wrong move with all this heavy equipment can lead to the collapse of a wall or floor and some serious injuries. Professionals have seen it all before, however, and know how to avoid the most serious pitfalls that come with these kinds of structural repairs. Better still, they can react quickly and effectively when the situation changes without warning. Therefore professional services are accepted to be vastly superior to DIY repairs.
